Date: Thursday

Time: 2:00-2:50 PM

Session Description

The session will focus on the crucial role sports plays in our lives. It will further touch on how sports can be used as a tool to bring development in our communities, how it can help bring together people and other cultures, how sports has helped developed certain particular countries (case study will be provided) and how YES Alumni in Ghana used sports to sensitize the youth towards the 2016 general elections in Ghana and how it can be replicated in other countries.

What will youth learn and be able to do at the end of the session?

At the end of the program, the students(youth) would be able to acquire in-depth knowledge and understanding about the sports can play in our country in terms of development. These outcomes are aligned with the UN sustainable development goals. Find below how sports can help us attain the development goals.

  • Sport can raise awareness on sustainable food sourcing, food security, healthy nutrition and sustainable agriculture. Sport organizations can set an example by sourcing food from responsible producers and tackling food waste impact. Sport-based educational initiatives can aim at changing behaviours towards a sustainable future.
  • Through sport, individuals can adopt active lifestyles that enhance well-being, health and prevent diseases, particularly no communicable diseases. Sport can be a successful tool for health education and awareness raising towards healthy lives, especially among hard-to-reach or vulnerable individuals and communities such as refugees.
  • Sport and physical education can motivate children and youth to attend and engage in formal and informal education, as well as improve academic performance and learning outcomes. Sport can teach transferable life skills and key values such as tolerance, inclusion and can lead towards learning opportunities beyond school.
  • The global reach, unmatched popularity and universal character of sport make it a versatile means of implementation. Sport can pool resources, create synergies, and build multi-stakeholder networks and partnerships for sustainable development and peace goals by bringing together a wide variety of actors from different sectors.
