Session Description
In this Session the students will share about the different activities undertaken at the farm with an aim of skilling them to be extension workers in their communities.
In grade 8, the students are taught how to grow vegetables. They till till the land, care for the crops and are taught better methods of crop husbandry. At the end of the season, they sell to the school, parents, teachers and the community. The income generated is shared 50 - 50 with the school farm.
In grade 9, the students are taught dairy management and good animal husbandry practices. There is no income eared by students since the animals belong to the school farm.
In grade 10 and 12, the students grow banana and each student owns a sucker that she takes good care of. On maturation, the income generated from sell is shared 50 - 50 with the school farm. These activities are lined up to sink with the school curriculum.
The school also organize annual farm camp where other schools join Gayaza High school to live like entrepreneurial farmers for 4 days. They visit model farmers to learn and attain more skills.
All these activities are geared at creating a generation of extension workers since students go back to their communities to share the skills gained and hence creating hunger free world.
What will youth learn and be able to do at the end of the session?
At the end of this session, participants will have;
- gained an understanding of how students can be skilled through incorporating farm activities in school curriculum
- understood the chain process that an entrepreneurial farmer goes through before getting income
- gained an understanding of the different crops grown and animals reared in Uganda
- gained an understanding of how students can serve as extension workers in their communities.
