Katherine Felter works as the Global Studies Coordinator at MacFarland MS, a dual language public school in Washington DC. Her experience in dual lanugage education and studies of International Development and Education at American University have allowed her to support the school in multiple capacities. She supports the dynamic middle school's development their Global Studies model and regularly collaborates with district-wide colleagues as DCPS continues to develop their Global Schools network.  Katherine has traveled and studied throughout North and South America and the Caribbean. When she is not working to create engaging learning experiences for students and teachers, she is playing with her son, Phoenix, doing or teaching yoga, biking or planning her next adventure.

Session Description

In this Ignite Talk, participants will learn about how one DC public school is framing global issues through the SDGs and integrating them into instruction. There will be examples of social-emotional learning connections as well as learning opportunities for students and educators to develop their global competencies. 

What will educators learn and be able to do at the end of the session?

Participants will understand how one urban middle school is: 

  • developing learning experiences for students to learn about the SDGs
  • enhancing professional development for teacher's global competency
