Sara Whitaker


Dr. Sara Whitaker is a retired School Principal from Cumberland County, North Carolina. She earned a B.S. degree from Appalachian State University and a Masters degree from Fayetteville State University in school administration. Early in her administrative role in education, she began to focus on global education for students, making many connections in N.C. and beyond. She earned her doctoral degree in Educational Leadership in 2012 at East Carolina University and wrote her dissertation on global education. She now works as a consultant for Participate, a global education technology organization in Chapel Hill, NC, where she helps schools implement global programs, mentoring principals and teachers as they become global educators and open their classrooms to opportunities that will connect them with the world.

Michelle Macumber


Hailing from Nova Scotia, Canada, Michelle started her journey with Participate in 1999 when she accepted a job as an international teacher in Cumberland County, North Carolina. Connected to Participate for her entire 19 year career in education, she spent 14 years as a global educator in North Carolina, England and Paraguay before joining the Participate staff in Chapel Hill. As the Priority Partnerships Manager, Michelle oversees Participate’s major partners and connects with new districts who are interested in transforming professional learning to ensure that it enhances teacher practice and impacts students. Michelle holds a B.A. in English, History, and Women’s Studies and a B.Ed. in Elementary Education (with specializations in special education and technology) from Acadia University in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Session Description

Are you and your students engaging in global learning projects related to the U.N.'s Sustainable Development Goals or are you interested in doing so? Join us to learn more about how educators have embraced these 17 global goals, connected them to their standards and explored these challenges with their students. You will discuss the importance of the SDGs, various ways to connect with others around these issues and practical ways to integrate the SDGs into your curriculum. See how educators and kids around the globe are committing their imagination, talent and energy to create a better world by 2030 and walk away with lesson plans and resources that will support you and your students in doing the same!

What will educators learn and be able to do at the end of the session?

Demonstrate the steps to integrate global connections through standards, utilizing an SDG as the groundwork.

Explore opportunities for students to do research, collaborate and take action.

Explore available resources, courses and media as tools to enhance the learning experience.
